Sicily’s highest peak is the tip of that infamous firebrand, Mt Etna. Today’s Catania sits atop the Roman town, with the Greek city buried beneath. While nature has conspired to hide its rich history, many historic sites (including fine Baroque architecture) remain.

Wedged at the mouth of a deep ravine, surrounded by sheer cliffs and blue waters, this tranquil town was once a great naval power. Now, terraced hillsides support fragrant lemon groves that provide a backdrop to the thrilling coastal drive through pastel hamlets perched above the sea.

Floating just off the coast of Naples is the Isle of Capri, of song and legend. The old town includes some fascinating walks along secret pathways, with La Piazetta at its centre. Take the chairlift atop Mt Solaro for breathtaking panoramas over the countryside and Bay of Naples.

A haven for artists, writers, poets and philosophers, the warm sun and gentle sea breeze has been drawing visitors to Sorrento for millennia. Its reputation as a playground of the rich and famous saw lavish villas erected in ancient times, and an emperor’s palace relocated to nearby Isle of Capri.
