The Somme is noted as one of the longest, most bitterly fought and bloodiest conflicts of all time. It is also a battle of great controversy, in which senior officers are noted for a senseless disregard and waste of life, as well as failing to achieve objectives. In the end over 1 million casualties was the cost.

Depart for the city of Amiens. En-route at Fromelles you will visit Australian cemeteries at VC corner, Pheasant Wood and the site of Australia’s first major Western Front battle, Memorial Park.
Across old Bullecourt battlefield is the ‘Digger’ memorial (with its poignant statue of an Australian soldier) and Jean et Denise Letaille Museum in Bullecourt, reopened on ANZAC Day 2012.
In 1918, Australian soldiers were integral to the defence of Amiens, where you will spend the next 3 nights. From your hotel in the city’s heart, most popular attractions are within walking distance. The cathedral is well worth a visit, for its medieval architecture and tribute to Australian and New Zealand soldiers.

At the fringe of the quaint historical town of Péronne lays Mount St Quentin and the 2nd Australian Division memorial. After this visit, your tour crosses The Somme to Le Hamel and the Australian Memorial there.
The afternoon is devoted to Villers Bretonneux. Here, three years to the day after the Gallipoli landings, Australian courage and determination helped win victory and end the German advance.
